How I wrote my Bedtime Stories

In the quiet hours of twilight, when the world softens and dreams begin to stir, I found myself drawn to my old writing desk. Its weathered surface held countless stories, whispered through generations. As I sat there, bathed in the gentle glow of a vintage lamp, I felt a connection to something magical.

It all began with a beautiful birdhouse, a heartfelt Christmas gift from my grandson Ian. As I admired the craftsmanship, I could almost hear the chirping of a cheerful bird, eager to make it his home. That’s when Flapjack the Bird flew into my imagination, his vibrant feathers and melodious songs bringing life to the pages of my notebook.

Flapjack wasn’t alone for long. As I pondered the world outside the birdhouse, I envisioned a wise old turtle named Aliyah, who lived in the nearby pond. Her slow, steady presence balanced Flapjack’s energetic nature perfectly.

Night after night, I returned to the desk, weaving tales of friendship, adventure, and discovery. Flapjack and Aliyah’s story was just the beginning. As my imagination soared, more characters emerged, each with their own unique personalities and challenges. Over time, I crafted a total of ten enchanting stories, filling my notebook with a world of wonder and whimsy.

With my ten manuscripts complete, I knew it was time to bring these characters to life. I reached out to Danny, my publisher, who had been supportive of my writing journey. Danny, recognizing the potential in my stories, connected me with Alice, a well-established illustrator based in England.

Alice’s reputation preceded her, and I was thrilled at the prospect of collaborating with such a talented artist. We began with Flapjack and Aliyah’s story, as it was the one that had sparked this incredible journey. I shared my vision for the characters and scenes, providing detailed descriptions of Flapjack’s colorful plumage and Aliyah’s intricate shell patterns, along with the magical world they inhabited.

When I first saw Alice’s illustrations for Flapjack and Aliyah’s story, it was like magic. She had captured not just their appearance, but their essence. Flapjack’s curious eyes sparkled on the page, his beak slightly open as if ready to burst into song. Aliyah’s wise smile seemed to hold secrets of the ages, her shell adorned with patterns that told stories of their own.

The success of this first illustrated story filled me with excitement for the adventures yet to come. As I looked at my remaining nine manuscripts, I knew that each one held the potential to captivate young minds and hearts. “Bedtime Stories under the Moonlight” was no longer just a dream – it was becoming a reality, one story at a time.

And so, with Danny’s guidance and Alice’s artistic brilliance, I embarked on the journey of bringing all ten stories to life through words and illustrations. My hope was that these tales would bring a little bit of magic into every home they entered, inspiring dreams and awakening the storyteller in every heart – just as Ian’s gift had awakened the storyteller in me.
